A five hour operation by police forces in Ankara Tuesday night, during which
9 people were arrested, appeared to reveal the presence of a previously
unknown gang in Turkey's capital city. Of the 9 people arrested, one was
Pilot Lieutenant E.E. from the Turkish Armed Forces' elite special forces
brigade, another was Sergeant M.T., and yet another officer from the
military whose name and rank have not yet been determined.
Suspicions of a connection to the May 18 attack on the Council of State were
awakened by the discovery of 2 Glock handguns, C-4 explosive, and other hand
bombs found in the group's possession.
According to sources, the police operation started following an email that
was sent to the Ankara Police Headquarters warning of the group's weapon
stock. The operation was participated in by special forces teams, working
along with the a team from the Ankara Anti-Terror Bureau. The forces stormed
an apartment near the Eryaman district of Ankara, where many soldiers are
housed. The raid revealed large amounts of ammunition and explosives. Though
details are still emerging in the case, authorities are now investigating
whether or not there might be a connection to the attack on the Council of
State two weeks ago.
