A probe yesterday was launched against a local gendarmerie chief who danced
with Kurdish songs in a student camp in Diyarbakir.
Elazig's Gezin gendarmerie chief Azim Basol faces a probe for attending a
summer camp for economically disadvantaged children organized by the
Diyarbakir Greater Municipality and dancing halay (a local dance) with
Kurdish songs together with Mayor Osman Baydemir.
Reports said yesterday that a captain from the Gendarmerie Provincial
Command questioned Basol, following the reports in papers about Basol
attending the summer camp.
Papers published photos of Basol dancing with Baydemir with songs in Kurdish
in the closing activities of a children summer camp, which took place along
Lake Hazar in Elazig's Gezin. The reports were claimed to have sparked
debates in the military.
