Press Release of the Initiative in Memory of Oury Jalloh from December 19, 2008

On December 8, 2008, the District Court of Dessau acquitted the two accused police officers Andreas Schubert and Hans-Ulrich März. The Initiative in Memory of Oury Jalloh announces an INDEPENDENT COMMISSION to investigate the circumstances of Oury Jalloh's death and the systematic cover-up orchestrated by the police during the entire court proceedings. Once again, the legal system has demonstrated just how little interest it has not only in ensuring truth and justice in the case of Oury Jalloh but in all other cases of racist police brutality.

A Call for solidarity

Brothers and sisters, 7th of January marks four years of Oury Jalloh's murder by the Dessau police. As the German judiciary found the policemen concerned not guilty in spite of the massive and publicly known irregularities and contradictions. We need to be prepared for another demonstration as the day is fast approaching; we need to come together again to fight this injustice. We should not relent our efforts, we should continue to strive hard, we should use this injustice of the judiciary to defend the further killings of foreigners not just Africans but all nationals living legally and illegally in Germany.

The election of Obama as US president blows a kind of hope into the dreams of simple minded people as if there will be some changes just to say that the US-regime may not be too bad and that there even exists so much democracy as to even allow a black man to become president. And a black president who even has somehow some relationship to Islam and Muslims may do a lot of good things!!

After a press conference on 10. December, the day of human rights, we, the refugees from the Refugee Camp Wilhelm-Busch-Straße, will step out on the street for a demonstration. Refugees from all over Bavaria and other people, who show their solidarity, will join us. We want to draw public attention to our living conditions, to the problems we experience dealing with the authorities and to the conditions in our refugee camp.

We don't want to sit down quietly and wait. We want to stand up and fight for our rights!
